I couldn’t hear nobody pray, Thomas

Treble chorus, piano

An exciting rhythmic piano accompaniment propels this arrangement of the well-known spiritual, with plenty of opportunities for children’s voices to soar.

Notes on preparation and performance

The verses may be performed by a soloist, or by the choir.

Text

Chorus:  I couldn’t hear nobody pray.
An’ I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
Oh, way down yonder by myself,
An’ I couldn’t hear nobody pray,

In the valley,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
On my knees,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
With my burden,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
An’ my Savior,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray. O Lord!

Chorus

Chilly waters,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
In the Jordan,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
Crossing over,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray.
Into Canaan,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray. O Lord!

Chorus

Hallejuh!
I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
Troubles over,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
In the Kingdom,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray,
With my Jesus,
I couldn’t hear nobody pray. O Lord!
